What Yellowing Leaves Mean in Cannabis Plants
Yellowing leaves refer to the loss of green pigmentation in cannabis foliage caused by reduced chlorophyll levels. Because chlorophyll is essential for photosynthesis, yellowing is a clear sign that the plant’s ability to produce energy is being disrupted. This condition may affect individual leaves or spread across large portions of the plant, depending on the cause.
Nutrient Deficiencies That Cause Yellowing
One of the most common causes of yellowing leaves is nutrient deficiency, particularly nitrogen deficiency, which typically appears first in older leaves. As nitrogen becomes limited, the plant reallocates available nutrients to newer growth, causing older foliage to fade from green to light yellow. Other nutrient deficiencies, including magnesium or iron, can also produce yellowing patterns with distinctive visual characteristics.
pH and Root Issues That Lead to Yellowing
Yellowing leaves can also result from nutrient lockout caused by improper pH levels in the growing medium. When pH falls outside the optimal range, nutrients may be present but unavailable for absorption by the roots. Watering problems, root damage, and oxygen deprivation can further restrict nutrient uptake and contribute to widespread yellowing.
When Yellowing Is Natural Versus a Warning Sign
In some cases, yellowing leaves are part of the natural life cycle of the plant. During later stages of flowering, cannabis plants may naturally redirect nutrients away from older leaves toward flower development, leading to gradual yellowing. While some yellowing can be normal, sudden or excessive discoloration is often an early warning sign of stress. Persistent yellowing reduces photosynthetic efficiency, slows growth, and can negatively impact yield if not addressed.
