Training, Pruning & Plant Structure

Topping

Topping is a pruning technique that removes the top growth tip of a cannabis plant. It redirects energy to lower branches, encouraging bushier growth and multiple main colas.

What Topping Is

Topping is a plant training method in cannabis cultivation that involves cutting off the apical growth tip, typically above a node. This deliberate removal interrupts apical dominance, the natural growth pattern in which the central stem grows more vigorously than side branches.

How Topping Alters Apical Dominance

When the top is removed, the plant redistributes growth hormones to the lateral branches. Instead of one dominant main cola, the plant develops two or more primary colas at the cut site. This creates a wider, more evenly structured canopy that can improve light distribution and increase potential yield.

Structural Changes After Topping

Topping is most commonly performed during the vegetative stage, when plants are actively growing and able to recover quickly. Performing the technique too early may stress immature plants, while topping too late in the growth cycle can slow development before flowering.

When to Perform Topping

Recovery time is an important consideration. After topping, cannabis plants typically pause upward growth briefly while redirecting energy to branch development. Providing stable environmental conditions and balanced nutrition during this recovery period supports healthy regrowth.

Plant Recovery After Topping

Topping can be repeated multiple times to further shape plant structure, depending on the grower’s goals and available space. It is often combined with other training methods to manage plant height and canopy density.

Why Topping Improves Canopy Management

In cannabis cultivation, topping is used to control plant structure, improve light penetration, and encourage multiple flowering sites. When timed and executed properly, it supports a more productive and manageable plant throughout the grow cycle.
