Root Development
Root development is the process by which a plant’s roots grow, expand, and branch to support water and nutrient uptake. Strong root development allows a cannabis plant to grow larger, healthier, and more resilient.
What Root Development Is
Root development refers to the growth and progression of a plant’s root system from initial emergence through full maturity. In cannabis cultivation, root development begins at germination and continues throughout the plant’s life, forming the underground foundation that supports all above-ground growth.
How Roots Grow and Branch
The process starts when the taproot emerges from the seed and grows downward into the growing medium. From this central root, smaller lateral roots form and branch outward, increasing the plant’s ability to explore the root zone. Fine root hairs then develop along these roots, dramatically increasing surface area for absorbing water and dissolved nutrients.
