Grow Room Setup & Equipment
Mylar
Mylar is a highly reflective plastic film used in grow spaces to reflect light back onto plants.
What Mylar Is in Cannabis Cultivation
In cannabis cultivation, Mylar refers to a thin, durable polyester film coated to produce very high light reflectivity. It is commonly used to line grow tents, walls, and enclosures to improve lighting efficiency by redirecting unused light back toward the plant canopy.
How Mylar Became a Standard Grow Room Material
Mylar was originally developed in the 1950s by DuPont as an industrial polyester material. Its strength, flexibility, and reflective properties later made it popular in aerospace, insulation, and eventually horticulture. As indoor cannabis cultivation expanded in the late 20th century, Mylar became a standard reflective material due to its high reflectivity and affordability.
How Mylar Reflects and Redirects Grow Light
Mylar works by reflecting a large percentage of PAR (photosynthetically active radiation), helping maximize light utilization within enclosed grow spaces. Unlike flat white paint, which reflects light diffusely, Mylar reflects light more directionally. When installed correctly, this increases overall light intensity and improves coverage to lower canopy areas.
Using Mylar to Improve Light Coverage and Efficiency
In cannabis cultivation, Mylar is most commonly used inside grow tents or attached to grow room walls. It supports higher PPFD levels without increasing wattage, improving yield efficiency. However, installation quality is critical. Wrinkles, creases, or uneven surfaces can create hot spots, leading to light stress or leaf damage.
Different Types and Finishes of Mylar
Mylar comes in various thicknesses and finishes. Thicker Mylar is more durable and easier to install smoothly. Some horticultural-grade Mylar is designed to diffuse light slightly to reduce intensity spikes while maintaining high reflectivity.
Common Mylar Issues and Installation Considerations
Common challenges include tearing, heat trapping if poorly ventilated, and glare during maintenance. Growers are advised to keep Mylar clean and smooth for optimal performance.
