Inhalation

Inhalation is the act of breathing a substance into the lungs. In cannabis use, inhalation allows active compounds to enter the bloodstream quickly through the respiratory system.

What Inhalation Is

Inhalation is a method of substance intake where air, vapor, or smoke is drawn into the lungs through breathing. In cannabis consumption, inhalation is one of the most common and fastest ways to experience effects because cannabinoids and other compounds are absorbed rapidly through the lungs and into the bloodstream.

How Inhalation Works in the Lungs

When cannabis is smoked or vaporized, heat converts cannabinoids and aromatic compounds into an inhalable form. As the user inhales, these compounds travel into the lungs, where they pass through tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli provide a large surface area that allows cannabinoids to move directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system and liver metabolism.

Why Inhalation Produces Fast Effects

This direct absorption is why inhalation produces effects within minutes. Compared to edible consumption, which must be digested and processed by the liver, inhalation offers quicker onset and more immediate feedback. This allows users to better control dosage by adjusting the number and depth of inhalations.

Common Cannabis Inhalation Methods

In cannabis use, inhalation methods include smoking and vaporization. Smoking involves combustion, which creates smoke along with cannabinoids, while vaporization heats cannabis at lower temperatures to release active compounds without burning plant material. Vaporization generally produces fewer combustion byproducts and is often considered a gentler inhalation method.

Factors That Affect Inhalation Efficiency

From a physiological standpoint, inhalation efficiency depends on factors such as breath depth, lung capacity, compound concentration, and temperature. Excessively hot or harsh smoke can irritate airways, while controlled inhalation supports smoother absorption. Understanding inhalation helps users make informed decisions about consumption methods, onset timing, and overall cannabis experience.
