Flower Development
Flower development is the process by which a cannabis plant forms, grows, and matures its buds during the flowering stage. This stage determines bud size, structure, and overall harvest quality.
How Flower Development Begins
Flower development refers to the biological progression of bud formation in cannabis plants after the transition from vegetative growth to the flowering stage. This process begins when changes in light exposure trigger the plant to shift energy away from leaf and stem production and toward reproductive growth. As flowering progresses, small bud sites form at nodes and gradually expand into mature flowers.
What Happens as Buds Form and Mature
During flower development, the plant increases production of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other secondary compounds that define aroma, potency, and effects. Structural components such as calyxes stack and swell, while pistils emerge and change color as the flowers mature. Proper flower development depends on consistent light intensity, balanced nutrient availability, stable environmental conditions, and healthy root function.
How Stress Affects Flower Development
Stress during this phase, including nutrient imbalances, temperature extremes, or improper watering, can disrupt flower development and reduce bud density or yield. As flowering nears completion, growth slows and the plant focuses on resin production and final bud maturation, signaling readiness for harvest.
