In cannabis handling, these containers are most commonly made from glass, metal, or high-quality plastic, with glass jars being the preferred standard due to their non-reactive nature.
Role in Preserving Cannabinoids and Terpenes
Airtight containers play a critical role in preserving harvested cannabis by limiting exposure to oxygen and environmental fluctuations. Oxygen exposure contributes to the degradation of cannabinoids, particularly THC, and accelerates the loss of volatile terpenes responsible for aroma and flavor. By maintaining a sealed environment, these containers slow the aging process and help retain the flower’s original characteristics over time.

During curing, airtight containers are used to stabilize moisture levels within cannabis buds. After drying, buds are placed into sealed jars where internal moisture redistributes evenly throughout the flower. These containers are opened periodically in a process known as burping to release excess humidity and allow limited air exchange. Different materials used in airtight containers can influence cannabis storage outcomes. Glass jars are widely preferred because they do not absorb odors, interact with terpenes, or allow static buildup. Plastic containers, while sometimes used, may hold residual odors or create static that can disturb trichomes. Metal containers can provide strong seals but are less common due to visibility limitations and potential for condensation if not managed properly.

Airtight containers provide protection beyond just air control. They shield cannabis from humidity swings, light exposure, and physical disturbances that can damage delicate trichomes. Many containers are also designed to block or reduce light penetration, which is important because light can degrade cannabinoids over time. This combination of protection helps maintain both the chemical integrity and physical structure of the buds.
Risks of Improper Use and Moisture Control
While airtight containers are highly effective, improper use can lead to issues such as mold growth if cannabis is stored with excess moisture. It is essential that buds are properly dried before being sealed. Additionally, containers should not be overfilled, as airflow within the jar is necessary for even moisture distribution during curing. Proper sizing, regular monitoring, and controlled burping ensure that airtight containers function as intended without creating stagnant or harmful conditions.
