Air exchange refers to the process of replacing stale air in a grow space with fresh air. It helps regulate temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels for healthy cannabis growth.

What Is Air Exchange?

Air exchange is the controlled movement of air into and out of a cannabis cultivation environment. In indoor growing, this process replaces warm, humid, and CO₂-depleted air with fresh air containing stable oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Proper air exchange supports consistent environmental conditions and plant metabolism.

Why Fresh Air Supports Photosynthesis and Respiration

Plants rely on carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and oxygen for root respiration. Without adequate air exchange, CO₂ levels can become depleted during lights-on periods, limiting photosynthetic efficiency. At the same time, excess humidity and heat may accumulate, increasing the risk of mold, mildew, and heat stress.

How Air Exchange Systems Operate

Air exchange is typically managed through exhaust fans, intake vents, and ducting systems. Exhaust systems remove stale air from the grow space, while passive or active intake systems introduce fresh air. The balance between intake and exhaust determines airflow efficiency and environmental stability.

The required rate of air exchange depends on grow room size, lighting heat output, and plant density. Higher heat loads from lighting systems demand more frequent air replacement to maintain temperature control. Dense canopies also benefit from steady air movement to prevent stagnant pockets of humidity.

How Air Exchange and Internal Circulation Work Together

Air exchange works in conjunction with internal airflow. While air exchange replaces room air, circulation fans distribute that air evenly across the canopy. Together, these systems prevent hot spots and reduce microclimates that can lead to disease or uneven growth.
