Harvesting, Drying & Curing

Wet Trim

Wet trim is a post-harvest trimming method in which excess leaves are removed immediately after cutting the cannabis plant, before drying begins. It is performed while the plant material is still fresh and hydrated.

What Wet Trimming Involves Immediately After Harvest

Wet trim is a post-harvest technique where fan leaves and excess sugar leaves are removed from cannabis flowers immediately after harvest. Because the plant material still contains high moisture content, leaves are firm and extended, making them easier to identify and separate from the bud structure. This method transitions the plant quickly from harvest to drying with minimal excess foliage attached.

How Wet Trimming Improves Airflow During Drying

One of the primary advantages of wet trimming is improved airflow during the drying phase. Removing surplus leaf material before hanging or rack drying reduces the amount of moisture retained around dense buds. This can lower mold risk, particularly in humid climates where slower drying may create favorable conditions for fungal development.

Workflow Efficiency and Processing Considerations

Wet trimming can also improve workflow efficiency. Since leaves are removed before drying, the post-drying process requires less handling. This can shorten overall processing time and reduce labor demands after moisture has stabilized. However, the initial trimming stage may require careful organization due to the stickiness of fresh resin.

Protecting Trichomes While Handling Fresh Buds

Trichome preservation must be considered during wet trimming. Fresh buds are softer and more pliable, which can increase the likelihood of compression or resin transfer during handling. Using sharp, sanitized trimming tools and minimizing excessive contact helps maintain cannabinoid and terpene integrity.

Environmental Management After Wet Trimming

Environmental conditions still play a significant role after wet trimming is complete. Once trimmed, buds must be placed in a controlled drying room with stable temperature, humidity, and gentle airflow. Rapid drying caused by overly dry conditions can degrade terpene content and affect final smoothness.

When and Why Growers Choose Wet Trim

Wet trim is often chosen based on climate, facility setup, and production goals. While it can reduce drying time and mold risk, it may slightly alter drying speed compared to dry trimming. When managed carefully, wet trimming supports clean presentation, efficient processing, and consistent flower quality.
