Necrosis

Necrosis is the death of plant tissue, typically appearing as brown, dry, or blackened areas on leaves or stems. In cannabis cultivation, it often results from nutrient imbalance, toxicity, or environmental stress.

What Necrosis Is

Necrosis is a physiological condition characterized by localized plant tissue death. In cannabis plants, necrotic tissue appears dry, brittle, and discolored, often turning brown or black. Unlike chlorosis, which involves yellowing due to reduced chlorophyll, necrosis indicates that cells have been permanently damaged.

How Necrosis Develops in Cannabis Plants

Necrosis commonly develops as a progression of severe nutrient deficiency or toxicity. For example, prolonged potassium or calcium deficiency may begin with discoloration and eventually lead to tissue breakdown. Nutrient burn from overfeeding can also cause necrotic leaf tips or margins as salt accumulation damages plant cells.

Nutrient-Related Causes of Necrosis

Environmental stress is another contributing factor. Excessive heat, light intensity, overwatering, or root damage can impair cellular function and restrict nutrient movement, leading to tissue death. In some cases, pH imbalance or nutrient lockout prevents essential elements from reaching plant tissues, indirectly causing necrosis.

Environmental Stress and Tissue Death

The location and pattern of necrotic areas help with diagnosis. Leaf edge necrosis may suggest potassium-related issues, while spotting or irregular patches can indicate calcium deficiency or localized stress. Identifying the pattern helps distinguish between nutrient-related and environmental causes.

Diagnosing Necrosis by Pattern and Location

Once tissue becomes necrotic, it does not recover. Corrective action focuses on preventing further damage by stabilizing nutrient levels, adjusting pH, and optimizing environmental conditions. Removing severely affected leaves may also improve airflow and reduce secondary stress.

Why Prompt Correction of Necrosis Is Important

In cannabis cultivation, necrosis is a sign of advanced stress that requires prompt evaluation. Addressing the root cause protects remaining healthy tissue and supports continued plant development through the remainder of the growth cycle.
