Runoff
Runoff is the excess water or nutrient solution that drains from the bottom of a container after irrigation. In cannabis cultivation, it is used to help manage salt levels and monitor root zone conditions.

What Runoff Is
Runoff refers to the portion of irrigation water or nutrient solution that passes through the growing medium and exits the container during watering. In cannabis cultivation, producing a controlled amount of runoff is often intentional, serving as a method to maintain nutrient balance and prevent the accumulation of dissolved mineral salts in the root zone.
How Runoff Prevents Salt Buildup
As nutrients are delivered through irrigation, some mineral salts remain behind in the medium. Without adequate drainage, these salts can concentrate over time, increasing the risk of overfeeding, nutrient burn, or nutrient lockout. Allowing water to drain through the container helps flush excess buildup and stabilize nutrient levels around the roots.
Using Runoff to Monitor Root Zone Conditions
Runoff also provides valuable diagnostic information. Growers frequently measure the pH and electrical conductivity (EC) of runoff to assess the internal condition of the growing medium. Comparing input values to runoff readings helps identify whether nutrients are accumulating, being absorbed efficiently, or falling outside ideal ranges.
Runoff Practices Across Different Growing Systems
The role of runoff varies depending on the cultivation system. In coco coir and hydroponic setups, consistent runoff is typically recommended because these systems lack the buffering capacity of soil. In organic soil systems, runoff is managed more carefully to avoid unnecessarily disturbing microbial activity while still preventing salt accumulation.

Insufficient runoff can allow salts to build up and create root stress, while excessive runoff may lead to nutrient waste and unstable feeding practices. Finding the appropriate balance requires attention to container size, irrigation frequency, and medium type.
