Perlite

What Perlite Is
Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that expands when heated, forming lightweight white granules with a highly porous structure. In cannabis cultivation, perlite is commonly added to soil and soilless mixes to improve physical properties rather than provide nutrients.
How Perlite Improves Root Zone Aeration
The primary function of perlite is aeration. Its rigid, irregular particles create air pockets within the growing medium, allowing oxygen to move freely through the root zone. Adequate oxygen availability is essential for root respiration, energy production, and overall plant health, especially in container-grown cannabis.
The Role of Perlite in Drainage
Perlite also improves drainage by preventing water from pooling or compacting the medium. Excess water drains easily around perlite particles, reducing the risk of waterlogged conditions that can lead to root stress or disease. This makes perlite especially valuable in mixes used for frequent watering or high-moisture environments.
Structural Stability of Perlite in Growing Media
Structurally, perlite helps maintain consistency over time. Unlike organic materials that break down and compress, perlite remains stable throughout the grow cycle. This stability preserves pore space and airflow, ensuring that roots continue to receive oxygen as plants mature.
Chemical Inertness and Nutrient Neutrality of Perlite
Perlite is chemically inert and contains no nutrients. Because it does not interact with fertilizers or alter pH, it provides growers with predictable control over feeding and soil chemistry. Nutrients must be supplied through soil amendments or nutrient solutions when perlite is used.
