What Perlite Is

Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that expands when heated, forming lightweight white granules with a highly porous structure. In cannabis cultivation, perlite is commonly added to soil and soilless mixes to improve physical properties rather than provide nutrients.

How Perlite Improves Root Zone Aeration

The primary function of perlite is aeration. Its rigid, irregular particles create air pockets within the growing medium, allowing oxygen to move freely through the root zone. Adequate oxygen availability is essential for root respiration, energy production, and overall plant health, especially in container-grown cannabis.

Perlite also improves drainage by preventing water from pooling or compacting the medium.
